The Missing Link in Medicine Today

(Homoeopathy provides the much needed missing link to modern medical therapeutics in the present century.)

Dr R S Pareek - Dr Alok Pareek

Looking back over the last years and nothing the tremendous advances made in medical science during this period. the casual observer might be led to suppose that Homoeopathy has now lost forever any chance of gaining a firm foothold in the medical scene. But Homoeopathy based on definite principles which are again based on natural laws enduring the strongest opposition and the most persistent persecution that has ever been experienced by any scientific school of thought has strongly emerged as the medicine for modern man today.

During Hahnemann s time the differences between Homoeopaths & Allopaths was very great and very real. But during the years that have passed the position has changed quiet a lot. The relation of one school to the other better. this change is of course due to the phenomenal advance of medicine during the past century. the homoeopath of today does not dispute the inestimable value of the scientific knowledge that has accumulated. the homoeopath of today welcomes the improvement in medical diagnosis and advancement in modern surgery. the knowledge he feels is the common heritage of all medical men. But let it be known that this change of attitude is solely due to allopathy being brought by scientific progress into line with Homoeopathy. The science of allergology & vaccine therapy are a step towards them. Dr Ruthven Mitchell in his famous book HOMOEOPATHY has remarked It is Allopathy that is charging, the principles of Homoeopathy remain the same as when Hahnemann inunciated them.

Homoeopathy is based on definite principles which are based on natural laws. hahnemann said In order to cure gently, quickly, unfailingly and permanently select for every case of a disease, a medicine capable of calling forth an affection similar to that which it is intended to cure. hahnemann in his Law of Cure established forever the relation between drug & disease. Such a law makes the Homoeopathic physician master of the situation in all kinds of adverse and difficult circumstances.

For all its detail studies in disease and in drugs allopathy has nothing to guide it, as to the Curative relation between the two; it is only Homoeopathy that supplies the Missing Link. Any new named disease, be it an H.I.V. infection or any new found viral condition becomes allopathically a difficult disease. Once the new disease in isolated, missions of dollars are spent to find a powerful drug for it. this new powerful drug very soon again needs replacement. Since starting to use these drugs, the germs have been changing by becoming acclematised to the antibiotics in much the same way as we become acclematised to germs by developing a natural immunity against them. thus the original penicilin failed to live up to their initial success & substitute has to be found to replace them.

Today some 60 years after the discovery of penicillin there have been mushrooming in the number of antibiotics, the newer one replacing the older. This futile tail-chasing. of multiplication of antibiotics continues unabated.

On the other hand the homoeopathic Materia Medica has grown. But the first drug proved Homoeopathically more than years ago is as important today as was at its inception and will remain so for all the times to come. it is illimitable, whatever can cause can cure whether it be the venom of serpent, the poison of plant, mineral of even inert substance insoluble until Homoeopathically prepared. When Hahnemann died, he had 205 very well proved remedies in his medicine chest. today the number is in thousands. the symptomatic libarry of our Materia Medica is already rich enough to meet challenges of any new named disease even if it has not been previously seen.

The great Homoeopath Compton Burnett used to say that were he marooned without medicine on a lonely island, he would soon be able to collect for himself a useful pharmacopoea. Observing the effects of poisonous bites, stings, plants, testing them on himself (Safely prepared according to hahnemanns method of attenuation) he would be able to use them without hesitation as. Occasion arose, for the relief of just similar conditions as they are capable of producing.
Now, how would an allopathic physician fare in a situation like this ? Without morphia, quinine, aspirin and the chemist and laboratory where would he be?

The Homoeopath is never at a loos he works by a law. He has received the freedom of the universe. the truth has made him free./
According to the theme of the congress Allopathically difficult diseases. I have selected for presentation few cases from this group which were referred to Homoeopathy as a last resort.

CASE No.1

Patient A a 48 years old female, was a known case of Large Atrial Septal defect (A.S.D.)

Echocardiogram showed no reversal of shunt, there was no evidence of pulmonary hypertension. She was normotensive and non diabetic.

A rutine pre-operative coronary Angiogram revealed 80% occlusion of anterior descending artery. Repair of A.S.D. with Single Vessle C.A.B.G. was planned.

surgery went off smoothly and the patient was shifted to I.C.U. (17th May 2001)
On 2nd post operative day - patient was found to be incoherent and there was slurring of speech, facial palsy, strabismus and ataxia.

Clinical examination showed evidence of Brain stem lesion.
An urgent M.R.I.- Head was performed. this showed
evidence of small infarct in Brain stem.

On the basis of clinical scenario and MRI findings the neurologist started her on anticoagulents and Antiplatlets agent.

Other vital features concerning the cardiopulmonary part were doing well.
Inspite of treatment her neurological status deteriorated and

on the 6th post operative day- even the higher centres were found to be affected with involvement of memory. the attendants were alarmed and with permission of the neurologist Homoeopathic advice was sought on the 8 th day.

8th Post operative day- She was immediately prescribed a Single dose of Arnica 1 M

9th Post operative day No improvement notices a single dose of Arnica 10 M prescribed.

10th Post operative day Definite improvement in memory and recognition was noticed.

12th Post operative day She was shifted to the ward from I.C.U. till this time there was no improvement noticed in speech, strabismus, ataxia and facial palsy. The cardio-thoracic surgeon was happy with post operative cardiopulmonary functions, but it was the neurological part which was a matter of concern. the neurologist was not happy as she was not responding to his treatment of anticoagulants and antiplatlets.

15th Post operative day She was prescribed a single dose of Bothrops. Lanc 1 M.

22nd Post operative day Definite improvement in facial palsy and strabismus was noticed. Slurring of speech and ataxia were gradually improving.

3 weeks later (reported in the out patient)
Slurring of speech persisted. Ataxia better, no facial palsy. followed on placebo.

A month later She now walks without support needs no help in attending to her daily routine in the house. Speech is better although not so clear as was prior to cardiac surgery.

Prescribed a single dose of Causticum 1 M.
The case is still on a follow up.

Discussion:

Homoeopathy has definite answer to post operative thrombotic phenomenon's and resulting neurological deficits.

Clinically potentised Arnica montana has emerged as a great anticoagulant and of immense urgent help in post operated cardio-thoracic patients.

From our clinical experience of largenumber of such cases we advice Arnica to be given immediately after Cardio Vascular Surgery as a prophylactic to ward of occurrence of post operative thrombotic phenomenon's.

Bothrops and other well proved snake poisons like lachesis with their individualised symptomatology are of great help in thormbosis and thrombotic phenomenon.

Causticum at a later stage is a grant long term follow up and helps in overcoming the residual paralysis effect.
It is a boon to physiotherapy.

CASE No.2

Mrs. A age 41 Presented to our O.P.D. in last week of June 96 as an emergency. she was immediately admitted to medical emergency ward. Her condition at the time of admission was very serous.

Appeared very pale, puffy & anaemic
Hb 3.8 gm%
Persistent high grade fever.
Art Pulse 90/minute feeble, weak.
B.P. 198/110 mm, of Hg.
Oedema feet.

Attendants narration The patient was alright till 3 months, back when she had high fever which responded to Antibiotic treatment. there was a recurrence of high fever a fortnight later with chill which did not respond antibiotic and Antimalarial treatment. She was hospitalized at Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi and diagnosed as a case of Acute Renal failure. Inspite of best efforts, her condition at the hospital did not improve. she was a last resort put on haemodialysis and later advised for Renal transplant.

Due to non availability of a family donor, high risk and cost involvement of a renal transplant, the patient was brought to us as a last resort.
On working up the case at our Indoor:

Symptomatically, we found that the lady was in great agony. she was thirsty for frequent small sips. there was laboured breathing.

She said she would not survive, she had a great fear of death.

INVESTIGATION:

Blood Urea 123 mgm%
Serum creatinine 10.8 mgm%

TREATMENT:

1st Day : She was immediately prescribed Ars. Album 30C every two hours.
Was given cold sponging and blood transfusion.
By evening, her mental agony had lessened.
Fever had come down from 103.8iF to 101iF.

2nd Day : Slept overnight, mentally a bit calm, thirst not so frequent. Hb 6.2 gm% (after blood transfusion) urinary output 540 ml in 24 hours.
B.P. 170/100 mm of Hg
Temp. 100.8iF
Ars. ALBUM 30 continued four hourly.

3rd Day : Slept well the previous night. Told her husband that she will be alright. (A marked improvement in her mental state was noticed.)
urinary output 900 ml. in 24 hours.
B.P. 170/92 mm of Hg.
Temp. 99iF
Blood urea 117 mgm%
Serum Creatinine 8.3 mgm%

4th Day : Prescribed
Serum Anguillar Ichthyotoxin 30C thrice daily (Eel Serum)

5th, 6th & 7th Day : Gradual improvement in general state noticed. Eel. Serum 30C continued.

8th Day : Cheerful
General condition good.
No fever
B.P.142/90 mm of Hg.
Blood urea 68 mgm%
Serum Creatinine 5.1 mgm %
Eel Serum 30C continued.

12th Day : General condition better.
No fever
B.P. 142/90 mm of Hg.
Blood urea 60 mgm%
Serum Creatinine 3.8 mgm %
Eel Serum 30C continued.

15th Day : discharged from the hospital in a fairly good general condition. We could see a smile on her face as she was happy to go home.
Strict Dietary precaution advised.
Eel Serum 30C continued. With advice to report fifteen days later.
The case was followed till six months later with (15-12-96)
Hb 10.8 gms%
Blood urea 44 mgm%
S. Creatinine 2.8 mgm%

Homoeopathic prescribing as Hahnemann says is the only Correct, direct means of Cure, as it is only possible to draw one straight line between to given points. The wisest and most experience heads in the medical world today are seriously concerned with the fact that we are treating diseases only in bits and parts and forgetting the sick patient. today there is much of science, much of treatment but very little healing. Homoeopathy today definitely scores the point with its conception of disease in its deeper implications and wider perspective as a biological phenomenon of Altered life.
